MONTGOMERY, Ala. – The Alabama State University baseball team will step back into Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) play this weekend as the Hornets travel to Itta Bena, Miss., to take on Mississippi Valley State at Magnolia Field.
Alabama State (7-15 overall, 4-2 SWAC) enter the weekend off a mid-week loss to South Alabama and are looking to get back into the win column in SWAC play. The last time the Hornets took on a SWAC opponent, ASU fell to Jackson State, 4-1, on March 12.
Against South Alabama, the Hornets used five pitchers in the 13-4 loss on Tuesday. Alabama State fell behind 5-1 after the first inning and tried to rally late.
Ray Hernandez belted his third home run of the season, but it wasn't enough in the loss to the Jaguars.
Mississippi Valley State (4-13, 3-6) come into the weekend having won two out of its last three games, including taking the last two games against Alabama A&M. The Delta Devils dropped their only mid-week game to Central Arkansas, 9-2, on Wednesday.
Alabama State will be playing on the road for the ninth time this month and the fourth road series. The Hornets will have three games in Itta Bena, Miss., before playing one final time on the road on Wednesday in Tallahassee, Fla., against Florida A&M.
First pitch against the Delta Devils is set for 3 p.m. on Friday at Magnolia Field. The series continues on Saturday and Sunday with 1 p.m. start times.
