ARLINGTON, Texas – The Alabama State University women's bowling team got off to a great start on Friday during the opening day of the 2017 Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) Tournament Championship at the Bowling International Training and Research Center.
The Lady Hornets (60-58) earned the No. 1 seed heading into Saturday's double-elimination bracket competition after rolling a 4,715 total pinfall. ASU was the most consistent team in the qualifying round, with all of its cumulative team scores being above 900 (948, 962, 912, 987, 906).
"The team executed at an extreme high level today," Alabama State head coach
Andrew Chatmon said. "I am very proud of their performance. We need to continue and maintain this through tomorrow. We need to take this tournament one match at a time."
Alabama State went 4-1 during Friday's play and opened the action with a 948-792 win over Grambling State. The lone setback of the day happened in the second match with a 962-980 loss to Prairie View A&M. The Lady Hornets wrapped up the day with a 912-880 win over Jackson State, a 987-912 victory over Texas Southern and conclude the day with a 906-862 win over Southern.
Alabama State will enter Saturday's bracket play as the top seed and will get a bye during the opening round of play.
Texas Southern earned the No. 2 seed (4,675 total pins) and Jackson State is the No. 3 seed (4,596 total pins). Regular season SWAC champion Prairie View A&M, ranked No. 19 nationally, will enter as the No. 4 seed (4,502 total pins), while Southern (4,237 total pins) is the No. 5 seed. Grambling State rounds out the field as the No. 6 seed (3,992 total pins).
Alabama State's
Haley Young was the best individual bowler on the day. Young averaged a 211.00 per contest with scores of 256, 190, 216, 217 and 176.
The Lady Hornets placed all six bowlers inside the Top 25 individually.
Young earned the top spot, while
Rebecca Hresko tallied 934 total pins (186.80) to finish 11
th.
Gabrielle Hosein registered a 530 in three matches to average a 186.67 to finish 12
th.
Tiarra Wilkins,
Miranda Remmel and
Jessica Sawmiller finished 20
th, 21
st and 22
nd, respectively.
The Lady Hornets will enter Saturday's bracket play as the top seed. The tournament is a double-elimination format and will conclude with the SWAC Tournament Championship on Sunday at the Bowling International Training and Research Center.
