ASU to take on Grambling State in three-game series

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Alabama State University baseball team will look to get back into the win column as the Hornets take on Grambling State in a non-conference three-game series in New Orleans (La.).

Alabama State (18-20) is 1-1 during its current six-game road trip and is coming off a 6-4 loss on Wednesday at South Alabama.

The Hornets opened the road swing with a 6-5 victory on Tuesday against Jacksonville State as Joseph Estrada provided the knock-out punch with a solo homer in the eighth and Austin Bizzle closed things down on the mound by picking up the win in relief.

On Wednesday, Alabama State trailed the entire game as starter Carlos Gonzales lasted just one inning and gave up three runs in a 6-4 loss to South Alabama. Despite falling behind 4-0, the Hornets battled back to cut the margin to 4-3, before surrendering two runs in the eighth. Alabama State had an opportunity in the ninth after trimming the deficit to 6-4, the Hornets had a runner on and tying run at the plate with two outs, but the game ended on a strikeout.

Grambling State (15-22) enters the weekend series having won four out of its last five games, including a weekend sweep of Southern and a 13-3 non-conference victory of Jarvis Christian on Wednesday.

The Hornets, which lead the series, 5-3, since 2009, will send Tyler Howe, Burke Echelmeier and Brandon Caples to the hill this weekend.

Alabama State begins its three-game series against Grambling in New Orleans on Friday with first pitch set for 6 p.m. Saturday's affair starts at 3 p.m. and the series will conclude on Sunday at 1 p.m.
