MONTGOMERY, Ala. – The Alabama State University baseball team will look to keep its current hot streak going when the Hornets visit Birmingham on Wednesday night to take on Samford.
Alabama State (21-21) will wrap up its six-game road swing on Wednesday as the Hornets are 4-1 during the stretch, including a non-conference sweep over the weekend against Grambling State.
Against Grambling State, Alabama State showcased its power during the three-game sweep. The Hornets outscored the Tigers, 32-11 and belted 11 home runs, including a school record nine in Sunday's 16-4 victory. Also during the series, ASU pounded out 40 hits and 20 extra base hits.
Cage Cox continues to lead the team and conference in batting (.385) as he improved by his average by 24 points. The freshman also went 13-for-25 at the plate last week and belted a school and career record three in Sunday's win.
On the mound,
Austin Bizzle picked up three wins last week in relief and improved to 4-0 with a 1.76 ERA, which ranks 32
nd nationally. In the 46.0 innings pitched this season, Bizzle has fanned 48.
Samford (22-17) enters Wednesday's game having lost three out of its last five games, including a 6-3 loss to Wofford on Sunday. However, the Bulldogs will look to get back into the win column as they face another Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) member, Alabama A&M, in Huntsville (Ala.).
This will be the second meeting between the two schools this season as Samford defeated Alabama State, 10-7, on March 8. Also, this will be the eighth meeting in the series with the Bulldogs holding a 6-1 advantage.
First pitch against Samford is set for 6 p.m. at Joe Lee Griffin Field.
After the single game against Samford on Wednesday, Alabama State will return home to the Wheeler-Watkins Baseball Complex for a three-game SWAC series starting on Friday against Mississippi Valley State.
