Lady Hornets open with three wins at Mid-Winter Classic

Alabama State upsets fifth-ranked Sam Houston State

JONESBORO, Ark. | 22nd-ranked Alabama State won three consecutive matches in the first day of the Mid-Winter Classic hosted by Arkansas State University, including an upset of fifth-ranked Sam Houston State.
 
Alabama State (30-13) started the day off with a 935-878 loss to 11th-ranked Central Missouri, before beginning the three-match streak with a 922-743 victory over Lincoln (Mo.). They followed the victory over Lincoln with a 936-786 over in-state foe Alabama A&M to run their record to 2-1 on the day.
 
The Lady Hornets then bowled their best match of the season, defeating fifth-ranked Sam Houston State by a score of 1,102-1,053. However, they cam up short to 20th-ranked Maryville 933-863 to end the day in their fifth and final match.
 
Alabama State currently sits 12th in total pins with 4,701 in the highly competitive tournament, while rolling an average of 188.0 per game. The Lady Hornets are currently just 29 pins from 11th and 46 pins out of the top 10.
 
The Lady Hornets return to action Saturday at the tournament, where they will face top-ranked Nebraska and third-ranked Arkansas State on the second day. They will also face 19th-ranked Louisiana Tech, Tulane and Drury.
