DALLAS | Alabama State split their first four matches of the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) West Roundup at USA Bowl Friday, winning their second and third matches on the day.

The 22nd-ranked Lady Hornets dropped their first match of the weekend to 25th-ranked Prairie View A&M, 917-778; a match in which
Jessica Sawmiller led the Lady Hornets with 166 pins.
Haley Young and
Alize Stevenson finished at 159, while
Miranda Remmel finished at 157.

Alabama State (34-21, 2-2 SWAC) bounced back with a 965-650 victory over Alabama A&M in their second match of the day behind a 235 from
Allison Sledge and a 208 from Young. The Lady Hornets won their second consecutive match of the weekend, claiming a 977-611 victory over Grambling State behind Sledge (210), Sawmiller (209) and Remmel (201).

In their final match of the day, the Lady Hornets fell 922-840 to Jackson State despite a 196 from Stevenson.

Sledge finished the day with an average of 205.33 in three games – leading all bowlers on the day, while Young finished with an average of 181.60. Remmel finished at 179.60 in five games.

Alabama State is currently fifth after the opening day with the split matches, currently second in total pins (4,514) just 13 pins behind Texas Southern – who finished the day undefeated.

The Lady Hornets return to action Saturday morning with four matches, beginning with Southern at 10 am.
