MONTGOMERY, Ala. | The Alabama State University softball program announced eight new student-athletes who recently signed National Letters of Intent (NLIs) to join the Lady Hornets' program.
Jamaica Flowers, a local product from Jefferson Davis High School, is a versatile player who also plays for the Montgomery Hurricanes. Flowers has been named All-Metro three times and was chosen for the AHSAA North and South All-Star game. She is also a USA softball champion. Flowers has hit .420 or better during each of the past two seasons and has 26 extra base hits. She also has 53 stolen bases.
Deanna Holland is an infielder hailing from Marianna (Fla). Holland also played for the Southern Elite, EC Bullets and Team Reaper. She has carried her team to the FHSAA quarterfinals and two district championships. She has also been honored as All-County. Holland is a three-year starter who has compiled a .350 average and has stolen 85 bases during her career.
Drew Wrask is a versatile player who comes to Montgomery from Buchholz (Fla.) High School. She has previously been named First Team All-Area and also plays for the Firecrackers Hoopes. Wrask has been a contributor on her high school team since day one, hitting .354 as a freshman.
Samantha-Jo Mata is an infielder from Cypress (Calif.) High School who plays for Monarchs Gold and was named first team All-League. Mata hit .369 as a junior and tallied eight doubles, one triple and one home run.
Aishja Wilcher is an infielder from Lamar County (Ga.) High School. Wilcher, who also plays for the Georgia Impact, has garnered first team All-Region and All-State recognition. During her sophomore season, she picked up eight extra base hits.
Schylur Edwards is an outfielder who currently attends Wallace (Ala.) Community College while traveling with the Bama X-Treme. Edwards has benn named NJCAA All-South First Team, NJCAA South Player of the Year, Region 22 First Team, Region 22 Player of the Year and a NJCAA First Team All-American. Edwards hit .446 last year and hit a stout 13 home runs. She also swiped 20 total bases.
Two pitchers complete the class with Kailyn Berry and Blair Mims. Berry is from Duluth (Ga.) where she plays at Duluth High School and the Georgia Impact. She has previously been named first team All-County and first team All-Region. Mims is from Chester County (Tenn.) High School and also plays for the Lady Jaxx 18U team.
Alabama State opens the 2019 season in Baton Rouge, La. on February 8 in a tournament hosted by Southern.
