MONTGOMERY, Ala. | Alabama State returns to the diamond Tuesday night after winning a pair of games at the Andre Dawson Classic this weekend, hosting UAB in the home opener at the Wheeler-Watkins Complex.
Game time is for 6 pm.
Alabama State (2-1) won its first two games over the weekend behind strong hitting and timely pitching. The Hornets went deep into the bullpen over the weekend, and came away with a team earned run average of 3.67 through three games.
Darrius Wright was named the SWAC Pitcher of the Week after going six innings against New Orleans and allowing just one run off of four hits, while striking out four. He picked up a win over the weekend, as did
Chase Laney out of the bullpen – while also picking up a save.
Hunter Phillips led Alabama State in hitting with a .600 average in three games as he picked three hits and an RBI, while
Joshua Dunson and
Joseph Estrada each hit .545 in three games. Dunson finished with four runs scored and an RBI, while Estrada scored three times and had four RBI – while also collecting a triple.
As a team, Alabama State hit .252 through the three-game weekend in New Orleans, and will face a UAB (3-0) pitching staff that allowed just seven runs last weekend. The Blazers also hit .293 as a team with a pair of doubles.
The Hornets will send
Ivanniel Vazquez (0-0) to the mound Tuesday night after a brief appearance in the season opener out of the bullpen, while UAB will counter Matthew Calvert (0-0) Tuesday night.
The same two teams will meet Wednesday night in Birmingham at Regions Park.
