MONTGOMERY, Ala. | Alabama State returns home this weekend hosting Southern in a four game, non-conference set, at the Wheeler-Watkins Complex beginning Friday and running through Sunday.
Alabama State (3-2) looks to bounce back from a one-run loss to UAB at Regions Field Wednesday night, splitting the season series at one game each. The Hornets have played three one-run games in their five games so far this season, winning two of three.
The Hornets will send
Darren Kelly (0-0, 5.40 ERA) to the mound Friday night for the opener, and he will be opposed by Tyler Robinson (0-1, 2.57 ERA) of Southern. Kelly did not factor in the decision against Prairie View A&M, a game eventually won by Alabama State in the ninth, but did throw five innings and struck out seven.
They will send reigning Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) Pitcher of the Week,
Darrius Wright (1-0, 1.50 ERA) to the mound on Saturday in the first game against Daniel Franklin (0-0, 0.00 ERA). Wright tossed six innings against New Orleans last weekend and allowed just four hits and one run – a leadoff homerun – with four strikeouts.
Dalton Wilder (0-1, 3.60 ERA) will take the mound for game three – the second game of the doubleheader – on Saturday. The freshman suffered the loss against UAPB last weekend with five innings of work, as he allowed five runs (only two earned) on five hits. The starters for the last game are not listed for either team.
Hunter Phillips leads Alabama State with a .385 batting average with five hits in 13 at-bats, while also driving in one run.
Joshua Dunson is hitting .368 with seven hits in 19 official at-bats, while scoring five runs; while
Joseph Estrada is hitting .350 from the leadoff spot with seven hits and four runs scored. He has a pair of triples already this season.
Hunter Allen is also hitting over .300; coming in at .333 with six hits and three doubles.
The series begins with a single game on Friday beginning at 6 pm, followed by a doubleheader on Saturday (1 pm) and a single game on Sunday (6 pm).
