MONTGOMERY, Ala. | Alabama State opens Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) play this weekend, hosting Southern at the Barbara Williams Softball Complex beginning Friday.
Alabama State (8-17) enters the contest following a loss to Jacksonville State in a midweek contest, after winning three consecutive games at the HBCU Classic over the weekend.
The Lady Hornets and Southern (6-7) have met six times in the last four years, with Alabama State winning all six contests. The two teams last met in May of last season at the Barbara Williams Softball Complex, as the Lady Hornets advanced to the SWAC Championship Game with the victory.
Kristin Gunter leads Alabama State with a .361 batting average, 13 runs scored and six runs batted in.
Taylor Rosser, the SWAC Hitter and College Madness Player of the Week has a .346 batting average with nine runs off of nine hits, while adding three home runs and 10 runs batted in.
Vanessa Bradford (2-5) leads the Lady Hornets on the mound with a 3.72 earned run average and 34 strikeouts.
First pitch for the single game on Friday is 6 pm, while the two teams will play a doubleheader begininning at 1 pm. Admission is free for the weekend series.
