SMYRNA, Tenn. | Alabama State finished 22nd in the Music City Classic, closing the regular season and setting their sites to defending their conference championship next weekend in Arlington (Texas).
Alabama State (65-36) picked up a pair of wins on the final day in play in the best-of-seven series, beginning with a 4-0 victory over Elmhurst to start the day. The Lady Hornets swept through the play against Elmhurst after winning the first game 177-159. They followed that up with a win in game two 207-171 and in game three 202-199, before sealing the win with a 180-178 victory in the final game.
The Lady Hornets then defeated Felician 4-2 after winning the first two games of the series, before Felician won the next two to even the series at 2-all. The Lady Hornets won game five 179-170, before winning the final game 178-170 to claim the series and move on to face UMES. In that final series, the Lady Hornets came up short 4-1 after winning the first game in the series.
The Lady Hornets picked up a win over Lincoln (Mo.) in traditional play 821-719; before falling Maryville 880-825. They followed up with losses with 13th-ranked Monmouth (1029-873) and 17th-ranked LIU-Brooklyn (941-894).The Lady Hornets were able to get a win in their last game of the day, defeating North Central (Ill.) 889-694.
Jessica Sawmiller is 48th overall in the tournament with an average of 189.80, knocking down 949 pins on the day.
Alize Stevenson is the only other player in the top 100 of the largest NCAA regular season tournament of the season, with an average of 172.40.
Alabama State returns to action next weekend in Arlington (Texas) at the SWAC Championships, after winning the tournament title last season and the regular season championship this season.
