Hornets set to host Morehead State in two-game set beginning Tuesday

Series was originally scheduled to be played in Kentucky

MONTGOMERY, Ala. | Alabama State was originally scheduled to be on the road this week during Spring Break, however, due to weather conditions in Kentucky, the Hornets will now host Morehead State at the Wheeler-Watkins Baseball Complex beginning Tuesday afternoon.

Alabama State (12-8, 6-3 SWAC) enters the contest off a series win over Jackson State with a walk-off home run Sunday, and has won three of their last four games. The Hornets dropped a two-run contest to open their series against Jackson State, before coming back to win the final two games of the series (4-2 and 9-8 in 10 innings).

The Hornets will send Channing Walker (0-0, 9.45 ERA) to the mound for his second consecutive start, after starting his first career game against Florida A&M last Tuesday at home. The freshman went 3.2 innings against the Rattlers, and he will go against Kyle Cantu (0-0, 0.00 ERA) of Morehead State. Alabama State will send Ivanniel Vazquez (1-2, 4.03 ERA) to the mound in the series finale Wednesday afternoon coming off his 10-strikeout, complete game effort against Samford. He will be paired against Will Lozinak (1-0, 0.00 ERA) from Morehead State.

Alabama State enters the week hitting .265 as a team with 179 total hits – including 48 extra base hits – on the year, but have a 3.31 earned run average on the season. The five starters for the Hornets have a combined 2.27 earned run average on the season in 103.0 innings pitched, and have struck out 109 batters with just 34 walks.

Chris Lewis, who was inserted in the starting lineup on Saturday, leads the team in hitting at .417; while Hunter Phillips is hitting .365 after being inserted in the leadoff role and Ray Hernandez .328 thus far this season. Joseph Estrada is hitting .316 with three doubles and three triples, while Hernandez leads the team in home runs with six – while the two are tied for the team lead in runs batted.

Both games will be carried on the Hornet Sports Network, and admission is free to all home baseball games at the Wheeler-Watkins Baseball Complex. The game on Tuesday will begin at 4 pm, while the game Tuesday will start at 1 pm.
