MONTGOMERY, Ala. | Alabama State will begin Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) Tournament play Friday at the Bowling International Training and Research Center in Arlington (Texas), looking to defend their championship from last season.
The Lady Hornets are back to defend their crown that they won from Texas Southern by winning a pair of matches from the Lady Tigers on the final day in the championship bracket. Alabama State jumped out to 3-1 leads in both of their matches, and won both by identical scores of 4-2.
Alabama State (65-36, 18-6 SWAC) claimed the regular season championship at the SWAC East Roundup earlier this season, as they defeated Texas Southern in the final frame by picking up a split to claim the title 910-903. During conference play,
Tiarra Wilkins led the Lady Hornets with an average of 192.6 to finish third overall. She was joined in the top five by teammates
Alize Stevenson (fourth – 190.0) and
Haley Young (fifth – 188.3).
The Lady Hornets also had several student-athletes just outside the top 10 in
Jessica Sawmiller (11th – 183.9),
Allison Sledge (12th – 183.7) and
Miranda Remmel (13th – 183.7). Stevenson finished with the highest average among freshmen, finishing with a 190.0 average and 5,129 in 27 games.
Alabama State enters the championship tournament after a 22nd-place finish at the Columbia 300 Music City Classic in Smyrna (Tenn.) this past weekend.
The championship will feature traditional play on Friday, which will determine seeding for the double-elimination bracket format that will take place on Saturday. The seedings for bracket play will be determined by total pins from Friday, not the head-to-head competition.
The championship tournament will conclude on Sunday.
