PRAIRIE VIEW, Texas | Alabama State heads west for their second Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) series of the season, facing Prairie View A&M in a three-game series beginning Friday afternoon.
Alabama State (9-20, 1-2 SWAC) is tied for fifth in the conference after the opening weekend, dropping a series to Southern at home. The Lady Hornets sit two games back in the loss column of Mississippi Valley State, and one game back of three teams who are 2-1 following the opening weekend – including Prairie View A&M.
The Lady Hornets swept the series last year from Prairie View A&M, including winning a game against the Panthers during the SWC Championship Tournament at the Barbara Williams Softball Complex.
Taylor Rosser, who has not played since the HBCU Classic leads Alabama State in hitting at .346 for the year with three home runs and 10 runs batted in.
Kristin Gunter is hitting .329 with 14 runs scored and is tied for the team lead in hits at 23, while
Charlene Castro is hitting .324 with a pair of home runs and 15 runs batted in.
Hailey Walker is tied for the team lead in home runs with three, while hitting .290 with 14 runs batted in.
Justine Jean (3-6, 8.59 ERA) leads the team in innings pitched with 66.0 on the year in 18 appearances, with her latest start coming against 13th-ranked Auburn, while
Vanessa Bradford (2-5, 3.72 ERA) leads the team in strikeouts with 34 in 46.0 innings on the mound.
Prairie View A&M (4-14, 2-1 SWAC) enters the weekend after winning their series over Alabama A&M after dropping the first game of the series. The Panthers came back to outscore Alabama A&M 23-1 in the final two games of the weekend.
The series begins at 3 pm Friday, with the game carried by the PVAMU Sports Network, and concludes with a Saturday doubleheader beginning at 12 noon.
