MONTGOMERY, Ala. | Alabama State faces Mississippi Valley State in a Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) three-game series at the Barbara Williams Softball Complex beginning Friday.
Alabama State (11-22, 3-3 SWAC) heads into the series off the heels of a loss to 23rd-ranked Mississippi State at home Tuesday night, and are looking for their second consecutive conference series win this weekend. The Lady Hornets won two of three last season from Mississippi Valley State on the road late in the year.
With four Lady Hornets hitting above a .300, the team is hitting a .262 in 33 games. They have allowed 143 runs off 217 hits with 328 total bases, and are fourth in the conference in hitting.
Charlene Castro is hitting .317 with 26 hits and 20 runs batted in, while adding three home runs.
Amira James and
Hailey Walker, as well as Rosser, are tied with Castro are tied for the team lead in home runs with three.
Meanwhile,
Vanessa Bradford is hitting .400 in 18 games in the field. She is 6-for-15 on the season with three doubles and seven runs batted in. Meanwhile,
Taylor Rosser is hitting .346 with nine runs and nine hits, however, she has not played since the second week of March.
Justine Jean (4-8) has logged 79.2 innings for the Lady Hornets with 21 appearances (15 starts), while
Skyler Sullivan (3-7) has recorded a save in 48 innings pitched.
First pitch Friday is scheduled for 6 pm, with the two teams playing a doubleheader Saturday beginning at 1 pm. Admission is free to all home softball games.
