LORMAN, Miss. | Alabama State hits the road this week looking to keep pace atop the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) series as they take on Alcorn State in a three-game series beginning Friday night at McGowan Stadium.
Alabama State (14-13, 8-4 SWAC) trails Jackson State by one game in the standings at the halfway point of the season, and head into the series after winning a pair of conference series in a row. The Hornets have defeated Jackson State and Mississippi Valley State in back-to-back series, and swept Alcorn State back at the beginning of March.
In the last series the two teams played, Alabama State won the three games by a combined 23-1. The Braves only run came Saturday, before
Gage Dollar no-hit the Braves in the finale.
The Hornets enter the contest hitting .271 as a team with 58 extra base hits, including 37 doubles and 15 home runs. They have also scored 158 runs and stolen 43 bases, all while recording a 4.24 earned run average as a staff. Alabama State as recorded 223 strikeouts to just 93 walks this season.
Ray Hernandez leads the Hornets in hitting at .354 with 34 total hits. He has scored 17 runs and driven in 24, while also connecting on seven home runs. Meanwhile,
Joseph Estrada is hitting .343 with three doubles, three triples and one home run.
Noel Cheneau is hitting .316 with a team-high nine stolen bases, while
Hunter Phillips is hitting .303.
Meanwhile, Alcorn State is hitting .248 as a team with 57 extra base hits that includes 40 doubles and 14 home runs. The pitching staff as recorded a 7.70 earned run average with 169 strikeouts and 140 walks.
Alabama State will send
Dalton Wilder (1-3, 1.86 ERA), the reigning SWAC Pitcher of the Week, to face Carlos Lopez (2-1, 4.89 ERA) on Friday. They will send
Darrius Wright (4-1, 2.29 ERA) up against Jahborus Brown (2-5, 6.61 ERA) Saturday, before closing the series Sunday with
Gage Dollar (2-2, 3.86 ERA) against Bukhari Brown (1-4, 9.51 ERA).
The series begins Friday night at 6 pm, with all three games carried by the Hornet Sports Network.
