MONTGOMERY, Ala. | Alabama State and Alabama A&M hope the third time is the charm this weekend, as they Lady Hornets hit the road for a key Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) series to close the regular season.
Both teams are within striking distance of the East Division crown as they battle Alcorn State for the top spot. Alcorn State (14-32, 11-6 SWAC) leads the division by two games over Alabama A&M (15-17, 9-5 SWAC) and Alabama State (19-26, 9-6 SWAC) entering the final weekend.
The two were originally scheduled to meet April 6-7, however, Mother Nature spoiled those plans as it rained both days and the field conditions were deemed unplayable. They were scheduled to play just over a week ago, and again Mother Nature spoiled the scheduled contest, forcing the teams' hands this weekend.Â
Kaylee Davis leads the team in hitting at .342 with a double and 30 runs scored and 13 stolen bases.
Kristin Gunter is hitting .300 with a pair of home runs and 24 runs batted, while
Casey Durham is hitting .299 on the season with ten extra base hits and a team 23 stolen bases.
Charlene Castro is hitting .292 with a team-high three home runs and 30 runs batted in, and she is tied for the team lead in home runs with
Hailey Walker,
Amira James and
Hatty Shope.
Justine Jean (9-10, 7.77 ERA) leads the team with 127.1 innings pitched in 30 appearances, with 22 starts. Castro (3-3, 6.99 ERA) has recorded a pair of complete games and a save for the Lady Hornets, while
Skyler Sullivan (5-9, 7.15 ERA) has logged 73 innings for Alabama State.
The series starts Saturday afternoon at 1 pm with a doubleheader, while the series finale is scheduled for Sunday afternoon at 1 pm.
