Alabama State opens conference play on the road

Lady Hornets travel to Southern and Jackson State this weekend

MONTGOMERY, Ala. | The Alabama State University soccer team opens conference play this weekend on the road with a pair of contests.

They will open play on Friday, September 21 against Southern University, with the match scheduled to kickoff at 7 pm. Alabama State remains on the road as the Lady Hornets travel to Jackson State University on Sunday, September 23, for a 1 pm kick.

Alabama State (0-6-0) enters the weekend following a 7-0 road loss to Auburn on Sunday. The Lady Hornets are looking to win their third consecutive Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) title after falling short in the first round of the NCAA tournament to third-ranked South Carolina in 2017.

The meeting between the Lady Hornets and Southern will be the first since Alabama State recorded an 8-1 victory on senior night at the ASU Soccer Complex (Oct. 22, 2017). In that meeting, Teaggan Ilela and Mercedes Padilla each scored one goal.

Alabama State has won seven of the last nine meetings. The all-time series between the two teams is tied 5-5-2.

Jackson State holds the edge in the overall series with the Lady Hornets (5-10-2), however, the last time the two met, Alabama State came away with a 4-1 victory on October 20th of last year. Ilela scored one goal in that match for the Lady Hornets.
