Tournament Schedule
MONTGOMERY, Ala. | The Alabama State softball team will host its second consecutive tournament this weekend at the Barbara Williams Softball Complex with the second Black and Gold Tournament February 22 – 24.
The Lady Hornets (5-4) play game No. 10 Friday at 12:30 against Presbyterian before closing the day with a 5:30 pm tilt versus Grambling. Coach
Chris Steiner-Wilcoxson's team will play another doubleheader Saturday (UMKC – 5:30 pm; Howard – 7:30 pm) to close out their portion of the tournament. Admission to all Alabama State home softball games is free to the public.
A Look Inside Alabama State
- The Lady Hornets are 5-4 overall following a 3-1 loss in a gritty effort against Mississippi State on Wednesday night.
- Alabama State finds itself near the top of numerous categories nationally.
- Junior college transfer Alexis Sydnor leads Alabama State with nine hits despite only starting three games.
- Amira James' two triples has her tied with sixth others for eighth place nationally. As a team, Alabama State is ranked 21st in triples per game.
- Junior Jordan Amerson is currently on a five-game hitting streak after picking up a hit against Mississippi State. The catcher currently boasts a .412 batting average.
- Charlene Castro and Casey Durham both lead the conference in sacrifice flies.
- Alabama State leads the SWAC in total hits (74), doubles (nine), total bases (100) and triples (four). Justine Jean leads the conference in innings pitched (29.0)
A look inside the competition
- Presbyterian (2-5-2 overall) is led by first year head coach David Williams. The Blue Hose are paced by senior Ansley Wilbanks (13 total hits).
- Grambling State (6-0) has jumped out to a fast start under first-year head coach Nakeya Hall. Rikelle Miller (12 hits) paces the offense that leads the SWAC in average (.433), doubles (12) and home runs (4).
- Howard is a familiar foe for the Lady Hornets, falling to Alabama State on February 9 10-1. The Bison (2-7) are guided by first-year coach Tori Tyson. Pitcher Mackenzie Steele's 9.2 innings pitched against UNC-W on February 16 is the second longest outing in the NCAA this season.
- Meredith Smith-Neal (12th year) leads UMKC and has guided the 'Roos out to an 8-2 start. Four UMKC players have at least 12 hits while all three pitchers boast an ERA below 2.00.

- Alabama State hosts its final pre-conference home tournament March 1 - 3 at the Barbara Williams Softball Complex, welcoming Eastern Kentucky, Tennessee Tech, Southern and Southeastern Louisiana.
