BIRMINGHAM, Ala. | Alabama State junior pitcher Justine Jean was named the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) Pitcher of the Week, the league office announced Monday afternoon.

The honor was the second this season for the Levittown, N.Y. native, who is second in the SWAC with the 30 total strikeouts. Jean was relied on heavily last week, tossing 21.0 innings in four games with three starts and one relief appearance. She picked up a pair of wins and amassed 17 strikeouts. She tossed two complete games and kept Alabama State within reach against Mississippi State, allowing just six hits and three runs during a six-inning start versus the Bulldogs. Jean leads the conference with 44.0 total innings pitched.

Junior Alexis Sydnor's performance was also recognized as a notable performer after the Opelika, Ala. product hit .313 for the week and finished with five hits and five RBIs in three games played, including two multiple-hit games (Grambling State, UMKC). Against Howard, the junior launched her first home run as a Lady Hornet while stealing two bases. Sydnor is second in the SWAC with 14 total hits.

Alabama State (8-5) returns to action this Friday with a game against Tennessee Tech at 12:00 pm at the Barbara Williams Softball Complex. Admission to all home games is free to the public.
