MONTGOMERY, Ala. | Alabama State returns to the lanes this weekend with the Southern University Mardi Gras Challenge at AllStar Lanes in Baton Rouge, La. March 1 – 3.
Competition for the Lady Hornets (61-41, 19-5 SWAC) and the rest of the teams begins at 9:00 am on Friday and 9:45 am Saturday while the final day (Sunday) will start at 8:30 am. Friday and Saturday will feature five Baker games (total pin fall) and Sunday will feature best four-of-seven baker elimination games as the teams seek to advance through a pre-seeded bracket. Seeds will be determined by total pin fall from Friday and Saturday matches and the final standings will be determined by the results of the best four-of-seven baker matches on Sunday.
Alabama State will play Alabama A&M, Florida A&M, Grambling State, Jackson State and Southern throughout the duration of the weekend.
An inside look at the Lady Hornets
- Alabama State won eight of its 12 matches at the SWAC Eastern Roundup during its last time out.
- The Lady Hornets have won two of their last three tournaments, the SWAC West Round-Up and the Florida A&M Rattler Invitational.
- Head coach Andrew Chatmon has 520 career-wins entering this weekend's tournament, having recently secured No. 500 in January (1/20/19) versus Alabama A&M.
- Allison Sledge (208.77), Alize Stevenson (207.19) and Haley Young (204.35) finished the SWAC regular season second, fourth and fifth, respectively, atop the individual standings.
An inside look at the competition
- Alabama State holds a 4-2 edge over Florida A&M in 2019, including an 838 – 757 win over the Rattlers at the FAMU Rattler Invitational.
- Alabama A&M has struggled to find success against Andrew Chatmon's club this season, as Alabama State holds a perfect 12-0 mark against the Bulldogs this year. Grambling State is also winless against Alabama State (0-10).
- The Lady Hornets will be looking for redemption against Jackson State, who has won three straight against Alabama State.
- Southern has also found limited success against Alabama State, dropping 12 of 15 matches.
