BIRMINGHAM, Ala. | Alabama State put the finishing touches on its preparation for next weeks Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) Championships with a strong showing at the Samford Open at the Birmingham Crossplex.
The Hornets had three top-ten results on the day as many athletes rested in preparation for next week's Championship.
Noteworthy
Marquis Nelson finished ninth in the shot put with a distance of 13.69m. The mark was the third-best for a Hornet this season.
Arion Span turned in a third place result in the 800m behind a time of 2:16.83. The time in the 800m was the best this season for a Lady Hornet.
JuniorÂ
Kaila Lewies (sixth) turned in a time of 7.71 seconds in the 60m dash, a season-best for the Raleigh, N.C. native.

Alabama State will compete in the SWAC Championships February 14 -15 at the Birmingham Crossplex.
