@BamaStateSB hosts Grambling State, opens conference play Friday

Three game set will begin Friday night, doubleheader Saturday

MONTGOMERY, Ala. | Alabama State opens Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) play Friday night at the Barbara Williams Softball Complex against Grambling State.

First pitch Friday night is scheduled for 6 pm, with the two teams playing a doubleheader Saturday afternoon. Admission is free to all home softball games.

Alabama State (9-10) and Grambling State have met once before this season at the Barbara Williams Softball Complex, a 3-1 Lady Hornets' victory in the Black and Gold Tournament back on February 22. In that contest, Alabama State was held to just four hits – two of which were by Alexis Sydnor – and the Lady Hornets were able to take advantage of a Grambling State error early in the contest for a pair of runs.

The Lady Hornets look to get back on track after dropping five of their last six games, with a win against Delaware State this past weekend at the HBCU Tournament. Alabama State has played 12 of their 19 games at home this season, posting a 4-8 mark.

At the plate, Vanessa Bradford leads five Lady Hornets who are hitting .300 or better as she has posted a .500 average in 22 official at-bats with 11 hits. Sydnor is hitting .396 with 21 hits – four of which are for extra bases – and has scored 14 while knocking in 11. Meanwhile, Teah Steel is hitting .350 in 20 official at-bats with seven hits – including a pair of extra base hits.

Kristin Gunter, the reigning SWAC Hitter of the Week, is hitting .328 with 19 hits – including four doubles. She has scored 10 runs and knocked in another 10 for the Lady Hornets. Hailey Walker rounds out the group hitting .300 this season, hitting .317 with three extra base hits.

In the circle, Charlene Castro (1-1, 1.71 ERA) has logged 28.2 innings and leads the team in earned run average, while Bradford (4-4, 3.08 ERA) is tied for the most wins and has logged 38.2 innings. Meanwhile, Justine Jean (4-5, 3.69 ERA) leads the team in innings pitched having logged 60.2 on the season in 11 appearances (10 starts).
