ARLINGTON, Texas | Alabama State had its season come to an end just two matches short of the championship match at the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) championships this weekend at the Bowling International Research and Training Center.
Alabama State (79-53) and Texas Southern, the last two conference champions, faced off in the first match of the day and needed a roll-off to decide their opening match as both sides were tied after seven games due to tie in game one. Ultimately, Alabama State prevailed in the tiebreaker to advance to the next round (166-166, 147-169, 207-183, 200-166, 150-189, 206-183, 168-185, 94-77).
The Lady Hornets battled top-seeded Jackson State in the second round of the tournament in the winner's bracket, and held a 3-2 lead heading into the sixth game. The Tigers were able to win the last two games to advance through the winner's bracket over Alabama State (187-190, 185-216, 151-139, 232-159, 161-158, 141-178, 166-189). The Lady Hornets responded in the elimination bracket as they picked up a 4-0 victory over in-state rival Alabama A&M (166-149, 177-144, 179-153, 161-124) to eliminate the Bulldogs.
Alabama State moved into the final four of the tournament before falling to Prairie View A&M 4-3, seeing their season come to an end (155-187, 174-135, 193, 146, 170-180, 177-196, 203-158, 235-129).
Bailee Chapman earned All-Tournament Team honors for Alabama State who split their four matches on their final day of competition at the tournament.
