MONTGOMERY, Ala. | Alabama State scored the first three runs of the game, but Alabama A&M came back with nine of their own in the second to pull away for a 10-3 Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) win at the Barbara Williams Softball Complex Friday night.
Alexis Sydnor and
Kristin Gunter led Alabama State (17-16, 8-4 SWAC) with three hits each, while
Kaylee Davis and
Amira James both finished with two hits.
The Lady Hornets got on the board first in the bottom of the first when Sydnor and Davis both singled to left, followed by a bunt by Gunter to load the bases.
Hailey Walker then doubled to center to bring in Davis, Gunter and
Vanessa Bradford for a 3-0 lead.
Alabama A&M (17-14, 6-4 SWAC) answered with a nine-run inning in the top of the second, and ended the scoring with an Alyssa Lopez home run in the fourth for the final margin.
Bradford (7-6) suffered the loss as she allowed nine runs and seven hits over 1.2 innings of work, while
Charlene Castro allowed a single run and four hits in 5.1 innings in relief. Danielle Hansell (7-4) picked up the win for Alabama A&M.
The series continues Saturday with the first game set for 1 pm at the Barbara Williams Softball Complex.
