AUBURN, Ala. | Jamie Brown led several Alabama State track and field student-athletes at the Tiger Track Classic in Auburn with another top mark in the conference this season, on the opening day of the meet Friday.
Brown finished second in the triple jump competition for the Hornets with a jump of 14.93 meters (48-11.75), but was the top collegiate student-athlete in an event for the second consecutive weekend in outdoor competition. He hit his mark on the final jump of the day after fouling on his first two attempts of the day. His third jump of the event, 14.91 meters, would have been good enough for second place until his sixth and final jump gave him the top mark in the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) and second place overall in the meet.
Teammate,
Marcus Cade finished 10th overall with a mark of 13.77 meters (45-02.25) in the event. He was able to hit his mark in the third attempt, but missed out on the finals by just 0.02 meters. The mark by Cade was just short of his personal best of 13.82 meters (44-04.75) set at the Black and Gold Challenge.
Meanwhile,
Caesar Kemp finished 10th in the men's hammer throw with a distance of 43.86 meters (143-11), the fourth-best mark in the conference this season.
Bridgette Williams and
Latisha Locker finished ninth and 10th in the women's javelin competition, with Williams finishing with a distance of 29.22 meters (95-10). Locker finished with a distance of 27.15 meters (89-01).
Williams also finished 14th overall in the hammer throw with a distance of 46.53 meters (152-08), while
Kristen Thompson finished 18th overall with a throw of 41.55 meters (136-04). The distance by Williams is a new season-best for her, and moves her to sixth on the conference performance list.
Joshua Coffelt finished sixth overall in the 3000-meter steeplechase in a time of 9:45.09, finishing four seconds behind Tyler Robakiewicz of Western Carolina for a top-five finish. On the women's side in the event,
Mariyah Archibald finished seventh overall in a time of 12:12.46, finishing just two seconds behind Sydney Singletary of Troy in sixth place.
The final day of meet begins Saturday morning, and will run throughout the day on a rolling schedule.
