PRAIRIE VIEW, Texas| After a torrential downpour affected the first day of competition of the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) Outdoor Track and Field Championships, the teams were finally able to get back to competition and finished late Friday night.
Alabama State was able to get on the scoreboard in a few events Friday night, setting the stage for their heavy day of competition on Saturday. On the women's side
Bridgette Williams was able to score in the hammer throw with a seventh place finish with a distance of 47.43 meters, while
Kristen Thompson just missed the finals with a 10th place finish.
Meanwhile, on the men's side,
Matthew Kibet finished sixth in the 10,000-meters with a time of 34:04.22, while
Caesar Kemp finished fifth in the hammer throw with a distance of 43.70 meters.
Javaris Goins also finished fifth in the javelin with a throw of 44.37 meters.
The opening day of the championships is highlighted by the multi-events including the Heptathlon in which
LaTe'sha Locker placed in the top two of three events run on the opening day. She finished first in the 200-meters with a time of 25.45 seconds, and second in the high jump (1.58 meters) and shot put (10.70 meters). She also finished fifth in the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 15.27 seconds to set the stage for the final events on Saturday.
Meanwhile, four men are competing in the Decathlon including
Floyd Green with a pair of finishes in the top two including in the 100-meters (first) at 10.98 seconds and 400-meters (second) at 51.76 seconds.
Chaaka Trahan recorded a pair of top three finishes including first in the high jump (1.86 meters) and third in the long jump (6.60 meters).
Goins recorded a third place finish in the shot put in the Decathlon with a distance of 11.04 meters, while
Hamza Abdullah recorded his best finish at sixth in the 400-meters at 53.14 seconds.
The meet continues tomorrow, beginning at 8 am in Prairie View (Texas) as several events get underway in the qualifying stage.
