HUNTSVILLE, Ala. | Arion Span led Alabama State to a top five finish at the UAH Charger XC Open, recording her best finish of the year in Huntsville.
Span crossed the line sixth overall with a time of 18:50.29, finishing seven seconds out of the top five behind Kayla Easterly of Florida State. She was fifth all collegiate runners, and fourth among Division I runners in the race.
The finish by Span helped Alabama State finish fourth overall in the race with 117 points; finishing behind Florida State (24), Union (78) and Mississippi College (80) in the 5K race.
Shayla Sanders crossed the line 25th in a time of 19:55.08, followed by
Michaela Lewis in 37th with a time of 20:23.92.
Vinnelle Grant finished 41st with a time of 20:35.05 and
Mariyah Archibald 48th in a time of 20:56.51.
Meanwhile, on the men's side, the Hornets finished seventh overall with 203 points. They finished behind UAH (18), Union (76) and Mississippi College (92); but they were the top Division I team in the race.
Matthew Kibet led the Hornets with a 19th place finish in a time of 27:03.66 and was the top finisher among all Division I runners. He finished 15th overall among all college runners in the 8K race.
Daniel Quizon finished 40th in a time of 28:21.67, while
Ricky Thornton finished with a time of 30:55.29 and
Brandon Phillips at 31:51.42.
Javonne Kirksey crossed the line in a time of 32:16.93 for Alabama State.
Alabama State returns to action October 11 in Tallahassee (Fla.) at the Florida State Invitational.
