MONTGOMERY, Ala. | Alabama State will compete for the second consecutive week during the indoor track and field season, however, this week they will be in state and compete at the Samford Invite at the Birmingham Crossplex beginning Friday and running through Saturday.
The meet begins with just four events on Friday due to the completion of the Samford Multis on the same day, beginning at 7 pm with a pair of field events and running events. The Hornets will send student-athletes into action in the high jump (women), weight throw (men) and 200-meter dash (men and women).
The meet continues Saturday morning beginning with the weight throw (women) at 8 am, and the 5000-meters (women) at 9 am. The meet will continue throughout the day with the 4x400-meter relay at 6 pm.
The Hornets will look to improve on their marks from the opening week of competition this year, and from this same event last year. Last year in Birmingham, the Lady Hornets had five runners finish inside the top nine in the 200-meters led by
Kyana Evans. Meanwhile, in the sprints,
Zaria Whittaker and
Nia Jack each finished in the top seven in the 60-meters, while
Christine Lavallias (third) and
Ariayanna Val (sixth) ran their way into the top seven in the 60-meter hurdles.
China Reed and
Kristen Thompson each placed fifth in the long jump and shot put, respectively last season.
On the men's side,
Caesar Kemp claimed gold in the shot put, while
Marcus Cade (third) and
Chaaka Trahan (11th) recorded top 15 finishes in the long jump. On the track, a trio of student-athletes –
David East,
Kevin Spraggins and
Norris Spike finished in the top five in the 200-meters in the 2018 Samford Invite.
Live results will be available once the meet begins Friday night.
