MONTGOMERY, Ala. | Alabama State will travel to Birmingham to compete in their final regular season meet before the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) championships, competing in the Samford Open this weekend at the Birmingham Crossplex.
The meet will feature the likes of Azusa Pacific, Belmont, Emory, Furman, Georgia Southern (women), Hinds CC, Kennesaw State, Lipscomb, Louisiana, McNeese State, New Orleans, Samford, South Alabama, South Carolina State, Tennessee State and UAB.
The last time Alabama State competed at the Birmingham Crossplex, they were able to walk away with a pair of championships on the women's side by
Charminiqu Hackney (200 meters) and
Shamaria Lovett (60-meter hurdles) and several top 10 finishes including a pair in the 60-meters (
Kyana Evans and
Zaria Whittaker).
On the men's side, the Hornets had several top 10 finishes highlighted by
Marcus Cade with a trio of top 10 finishes in field events Sunday afternoon, finishing third in the triple jump with a distance of 13.58 meters (44-06.75). He also finished seventh in the high jump with a clearance of 1.91 meters (6-03.25) and eighth in the long jump with a distance of 6.58 meters (21-07.50).
The meet gets underway Friday with the weight throw at 8 am, while the track events will get underway at 11 am with the women's 60-meter prelims. The first day of the meet will continue throughout the day with the final event (men's 4x400) getting underway at 4:50 pm.
