MONTGOMERY, Ala. | Alabama State looks to extend their four-game winning streak on the road as they open Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) play in a three-game series beginning Friday at Mississippi Valley State University.
Alabama State (10-3) won a four-game series over Toledo, winning all four games by one run and winning each of the last three in walk-off fashion. The Hornets have played three conference schools this season, winning all three against SWAC West Division foes at the season-opening Andre Dawson Classic.
The Hornets, who were picked to win the SWAC East Division for a second consecutive year, won four of five last season from Mississippi Valley State – dropping their only game of the season to the Delta Devils at home in 10 innings.
Game Notes
The Hornets currently rank fifth in the nation in walks with 78 as a team, while they are also ranked 15th in triples, 30th in triples per game and 35th in win-loss percentage. They are also 41st in hits (12) and 46th in on-base percentage thus far this season.
Jacknell Guzman leads the nation in completes games with two, while he and
Austin King are tied for 18th in games started (three). Reigning SWAC Hitter of the Week,
Jabronski Williams is second in triples (three) and 14th in triples per game, while
Jeremy Rivera is third in wins (three).
Alabama State has won five games in walk-off fashion this season, defeating UAPB on a wild pitch and Oakland on a walk-off single by
Angel Jimenez. They then won three of the four games against Toledo this weekend in walk-off fashion.

AJ Gardner is tied for the team lead in home runs with two after his walk-off blast in the series finale against Toledo, while sophomore
Angel Jimenez hit two home runs in the same game for the Hornets.
The Hornets are 10-0 on the weekend this season, and 0-3 during midweek contests. They had a Tuesday game against UAB postponed until March 18 earlier this week due to rain.
Alabama State opened the season with 11 consecutive scoreless innings on the mound, beginning with run-rule shutout of Prairie View A&M in the opener. Including the seven innings of the contest, the Hornets did not allow a run until the fifth inning of the second game of the Andre Dawson Classic (against UAPB).
The Hornets started the season off 3-0 for the first time since 2013, a season in which they started off 4-0 with a weekend sweep of Chicago State and a midweek victory over Mercer. They went on to finish that season 33-25, including 18-6 in the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC). At 6-1, they are off to their best start in school history.
