Alabama State picks up win on first day of Colonial Lanes Classic

NEW ORLEANS, La. | Alabama State opened the 2021 season at the Colonial Lanes Classic, hosted by Tulane, picking up one win on the day without returning Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) Bowler of the Year Savanna Razor (Columbia, S.C.).

Alabama State (1-4) faced four ranked teams on the opening day of the tournament without Razor, who sat out due to an injury. They started the day off falling to No. 6 Sam Houston State 1,093-877 in their first match despite picking up more pins in the opening game (174-173). They faced another ranked team in their second match, falling to No. 18 Lincoln Memorial 900-882, however, they did record more pins in game two (174-164) and in game five (193-158).

The Lady Hornets picked up their first victory of the season over SWAC foe Grambling State, 827-636, picking up more pins in each of the five games including 68 more pins in game three.

The day ended with a pair of top 10 matches for the Lady Hornets, falling to No. 4 Vanderbilt 1,052-862 despite picking up 50 more pins (176-126) in the opening game. They also fell just three pins short in game three (182-179). The final match of the day, Alabama State fell to No. 9 Louisiana Tech 990-912.

The Lady Hornets return to action on Saturday with five traditional matches, and then bracket play on Sunday.
