NEW ORLEANS, La. | Alabama State picked up three wins over ranked teams Saturday on the second day of the Colonial Lanes Classic and had four players finish inside the top 30 after traditional play.
Alabama State (4-6) started the day with a win over defending Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) champion and No. 22 Prairie View, 1035-958 – the first of five straight matches on the day against ranked opponents. They followed that up with a 962-897 loss to No. 10 Stephen F. Austin, before their biggest win of the day over No. 16 (and host) Tulane 1032-1003 to start the day with two wins in three matches.
They would go on to close the day the same way they started with a win over No. 22 Prairie View A&M in their fourth match of the day, 975-943, before narrowly missing out on their fourth win over a ranked team as they fell to No. 20 UMES by just one pin 1054-1053.
Alahna DeGruy (Kenner, La.) led Alabama State during tournament play, earning All-Tournament honors by finishing third as an individual with an average of 224.60 and 1,123 total pins. She finished just behind Samantha Gainor (Vanderbilt) and Brooke Roberts (UMES). She was followed by
Lyric O'Steen (Southfield, Mich.) in 14th overall with an average of 211.60 and 1,058 pins.
The two were followed in the top 30 by teammates
Bailee Chapman (Gonzales, La.) with a 195.00 average and 975 total pins, and
Savanna Razor (Columbia, S.C.) in 29th place – after missing day one – with an average 191.60 and 958 total pins.
With the three wins on day two of the tournament, the Lady Hornets and Prairie View A&M will face off in the first match of bracket play (best four out of seven) on Sunday morning.
