BIRMINGHAM, Ala. | Marcus Cade (Thomson, Ga.) won a pair of individual events and Alabama State reached the medal stand in six other events in the season-opening BSC Icebreaker at the Birmingham Crossplex on Friday.
Cade claimed a title in the high jump with a clearance of 1.95 meters, while also winning the long jump with a distance of 7.19 meters to lead the Hornets. Meanwhile, the 4x400-meter relay teams for the men and women reached the medal stand with the Lady Hornets winning with a time of 3:51.71 with the team of
Ulani Toussaint (Miami, Fla.),
Kyana Evans (Detroit, Mich.),
Vinnelle Grant (Amityville, N.Y.), and
Morgan O'Neal (Sylacauga, Ala.).
The men's 4x400-meter team of
Nicholas Moseley (Pittsbury, Calif.),
Mason Foster (Pike Road, Ala.),
Kevin Smith (Saint Catherine, Jamaica), and
Matthew Clarke (Six Roads, Barbados) finished second with a time of 3:22.54.
On the women's side, several student-athletes reached the medal stand in individual events including
Shamia Jones (Albany, Ga.) in the 1-mile run with a second-place finish in a time of 5:21.96. She was joined on the medal stand by Evans with a third-place finish in the 60-meters with a time of 7.64 seconds, while
Rebecca Bernardin (Turk and Caicos Island) finished third in the 800-meters with a time of 2:21.79.
Several other Lady Hornets narrowly missed the medal with Toussaint finishing fourth in the 60-meters in a time of 7.69 seconds and
Taranique Alexander (Miami, Fla.) fourth in the long jump with a distance of 5.36 meters. Meanwhile, Grant finished fifth in the 800-meters with a time of 2.24.22 and O'Neal sixth with a time of 2:24.44.
On the men's side, Alabama State had a pair of student-athletes finish in the top 10 of their events led by
Cedric Jones (Tuscaloosa, Ala.) in the pole vault with a height of 4.00 meters.
Daniel Bayeshea (Kingston, Jamaica) finished 10th in the weight throw with a distance of 12.14 meters, while
Tarik Simpson (Wichita, Kan.) finished 12th with a distance of 11.73 meters.
Kamari Garcon (Ocoee, Fla.) narrowly missed the top 10 in the 800-meters with a time of 2:02.70.
