D'IBERVILLE, Miss. | Alabama State won four of their five matches on the opening day of the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) East Roundup to surge to the top of the standings heading into the final day of competition.
The day did not start the way Alabama State (11-4) envisioned, falling to Texas Southern 940-876 in the opening game of the day. They were able to bounce back against Alabama A&M 836-720, to pull to within a game of Prairie View A&M after a Panthers' loss to Jackson State. The 16th-ranked Lady Hornets trailed Prairie View A&M by just one game after the opening roundup a few weeks ago and defeated the Panthers 882-854 to draw even with just two matches remaining in the day.
Alabama State swept the final two matches over Jackson State (960-851) and Grambling State (840-617) to find themselves tied atop the standings.
Freshman
Savanna Razor led the way with a conference-best 205.20 average through five games, while
Miranda Remmel recorded the eighth-best day at 182.50 in four games.
Celeste Thedford also finished 12th on the opening day with a 172.80, while three other Lady Hornets finished inside the top 20.
Alabama State returns to action on Saturday, the final day of the tournament, against Alabama A&M.
