MONTGOMERY, Ala. | Alabama State opens Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) play this weekend against Jackson State at the Wheeler-Watkins Baseball Complex beginning Friday night.
First pitch is scheduled for 6 pm Friday, with the series continuing on Saturday (6 pm) before concluding with a 1 pm contest on Sunday. Due to COVID-19 protocols, only those listed on the Player Pass List will be allowed entry into the Wheeler-Watkins Baseball Complex. All concessions will be cashless throughout the season and the Alabama State University campus – including its athletic venues – are mask mandatory.
Alabama State (1-5) enters the series after a weekend loss to Eastern Michigan in a pair of one-run games.
Cristopher DeGuzman leads the Hornets at the plate, hitting .333 with seven hits through the first six games of the season including five extra base hits. He has recorded three doubles and triples, while scoring three runs and driving in four more.
Trenton Jamison is hitting .280 with a pair of home runs and four runs batted in, while
Santiago Garcia is at .273 with three extra base hits.
Meanwhile, on the mound, a pair of relievers lead the Hornets with perfect earned run averages.
Payton Harris and
Ryan Velazquez have each come out of the pen and allowed just one hit each, while
Breon Pooler has recorded a 1.54 earned run average in two starts. He has logged 11.2 innings and allowed just two runs off of four hits with 13 strikeouts.
Meanwhile, Jackson State (3-5) enters the series following a 12-1 loss to fourth-ranked Ole Miss on the road in a mid-week contest. The Tigers swept UAPB in a non-conference series in Jackson (Miss.) over the weekend.
