NASHVILLE, Tenn. | Alabama State picked up a pair of wins on the opening day of the Music City Classic Friday, including a win over second-ranked Vanderbilt.

Returning to action for the first time in a month, Alabama State (18-7) began the day with a win over Vanderbilt 931-874, before bowling an 867 in a win over third-ranked Arkansas State. However, they dropped matches to 19th-ranked Valparaiso (912-888) and 12th-ranked Tulane (1,020-867).

Alabama State ended the day with an 850-730 victory over Spalding.

The tournament continues with traditional play on Saturday with Alabama State facing UAB to start the day, playing five total matches.
