SERIES
All-time record: Auburn leads the series, 1-0
Last Meeting: Auburn defeated Alabama State, 63-9 (9/8/18)

GAME NOTES
  • The last time the two teams met was back on The Plains in 2018, with seventh-ranked Auburn coming away with a 63-9 win. In that game, Ezra Gray (Lynn Haven, Fla.) had a 99-yard kickoff return called back and the Hornets had three plays of 25 yards or more, including a 29-yard touchdown reception by Joe Williams.
  • Alabama State has played against teams from the FBS nine times, including a pair of games against SEC opponents since 2006. The last time the Hornets faced a FBS opponent, they fell to UAB 24-19 on the road, and had a chance to win late in the game.
  • The Hornets led the FCS in pass defense after holding Miles to just 35 yards in the season opener and are 10th in total defense giving up 203 yards last week.
  • Jeremiah Hixon (Monroeville, Ala.) led Alabama State last week with eight receptions on 11 targets, while Keron Jones (Oxon Hill, Md.) finished with four receptions on six targets.
  • Ryan Nettles (Evergreen, Ala.) missed on just 10 passes last week, finishing 20-for-30 for 19 yards, and he rushed for another 42 and set up the tying score in overtime.
  • There are Auburn ties on both sides of the football for Alabama State with defensive back Irshaad Davis (Carol City, Fla.) and Gray. Davis is the brother of former Auburn defensive back Carlton Davis who plays for the defending Super Bowl champion Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Meanwhile, Gray is the brother of Enrique Davis who originally committed to Auburn in the mid-2000s before signing and playing at Ole Miss.
  • Christian Clark (Cleveland, Ohio) finished with a team-high 10 tackles last week and blocked the extra point in overtime that proved to be the difference against Miles. He also has shed the pounds this year, dropping from mid-390s a year ago to 343 at game time on Saturday against Miles.
  • Jacquez Payton (Georgiana, Ala.), a transfer from Jacksonville State, had a pick-six called back against Miles and would have been the first defensive touchdown since Fall 2019 for the Hornets.
  • Clark and Davis share a common bond with their brothers winning the last two Super Bowls. Davis' brother, Carlton, won it last season with Tampa Bay; while Clark's brother, Frank, won it with the Kansas City Chiefs the year before.
  • The Hornets have a set of twins on the field this season for the third consecutive year in Bryce Webster and Devonte Webster (Columbus, Ga.). The twins both play on defense and both wear numbers in the 40s.
