MONTEVALLO, Ala. | Alabama State freshman, and reigning Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) Runner of the Week,
Shamia Jones (Albany, Ga.) won her first collegiate race Friday morning at the Falcon Classic.
Jones crossed the line in a time of 20:15.03, finishing just over two seconds ahead of second place Courtney Keeler of Montevallo (20:17.59). She was joined in the top 10 by
Rebecca Bernadia (Turk and Caicos Island) who finished seventh overall in a time of 20:48.79.
Penina Chelangat (Eldoret, Kenya) finished 18th overall with a time of 21:57.08, while
Jamila Thomas (Lewisville, Texas) finished 22nd overall in a time of 22:09.35 to help the Lady Hornets finish third in the event behind Auburn Montgomery and Montevallo.
Meanwhile, on the men's side, Alabama State finished fourth, just 10 points out of third after being led by
Matthew Kibet (Eldoret, Kenya) in 23rd place with a time of 28:25.19. He was followed by
Kevin Smith (Saint Catherine, Jamaica) in 36th overall with a time of 29:57.57. Reigning Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) Runner of the Week
Ricky Thornton (Indianapolis, Ind.) finished 43rd overall in a time of 30:31.02, while
Preston Walton (Jonesboro, Ga.) finished 45th overall in a time of 30:35.94.
UP NEXT
Alabama State will be off until October 9 when they return to racing in Huntsville at the UAH Invitational.
