MONTGOMERY, Ala. | Alabama State got back in the win column on Saturday afternoon with a 59-55 win over rival Alabama A&M inside the Dunn-Oliver Acadome in a Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) game.
In a sluggish game offensively, Alabama State (5-13, 3-2 SWAC) held the Bulldogs to just 22 points in the first half on just 30 percent shooting from the floor and not allowing them to make a long range. The Hornets shot nearly 43 percent, knocking down four threes, and going a perfect 2-2 from the free throw line in the first half. They were able to gain their largest lead of the game of nine points in the half with a 6-0 run with just over three minutes remaining in the first.
The Hornets were outscored in the second half 33-29, however maintained the lead for all but 30 seconds in the entire game. Point guard
E.J. Clark (Dallas, Texas) scored a game-high 10 points in the second half, including hitting clutch free throws, going 7-of-9 from the charity stripe for the game.
Trace Young (Owensboro, Ky.) finished the day with a team-high 15 points along with a pair of rebounds, while Clark added 13 points, five rebounds and four assists.
Isaiah Range (Cedar Hill, Texas) was the final double-digit scorer, finishing with 11 points and four boards in the win.
Alabama State finished the game shooting 37 (20-of-54) percent from the floor, 36.8 (7-of-19) percent from three and 80 (12-of-15) percent from the free throw line. Their opposition shot just 33.9 (21-of-62) percent from the field and 17.6 (3-of-17) percent from three.
The Bulldogs were led by Jalen Johnson with 16 points, while Anjay Cortez added 13 and Dailin Smith scored 11 points on the afternoon.

Alabama State will travel to Texas next weekend as they take on Prairie View A&M on January 22 at 5:30 pm and Texas Southern in Houston on January 24 at 7:30 pm.
