Hornets end second consecutive weekend of action in Birmingham at Samford Open

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. | Alabama State completed their second straight weekend of competition in Birmingham this weekend at the Samford Open on Saturday, finishing with xxx in the Birmingham Crossplex.
 
Vinnelle Grant (Amityville, N.Y.) led the way for the Hornets on the women's side, taking home a third-place finish in the 400-meter dash with a time of 57.94 seconds, followed by teammate Ulani Toussaint (Miami, Fla.) who finished 11th with a time of 59.72.
 
The Hornets also had two top-15 finishers in the women's 3000-meter event in Shamia Jones (Albany, Ga.) finishing with a time of 10:52.55s and Rebecca Bernardin (Turk and Caicos Island) finishing at 11:06.97, who finished 11th and 15th respectively, while Jamila Thomas (Lewisville, Texas) took home a top-20 finish in the mile run (5:46.53).
 
Mahogany Vinson (Richton Park, Ill.) also performed well on the women's side, earning an 8th place finish in the shotput event, throwing for 12.20 meters.
 
On the men's side, Cedric Jones (Tuscaloosa, Ala.) finished fifth in the pole vault event, while two Hornets finished in the top 25 in the shotput, led by Daniel Bayeshea (Kingston, Jamaica) in eighth at 13.62 meters, followed by teammate Tarik Simpson (Wichita, Kan.) who threw a distance of 9.82 meters. Bayeshea also led Alabama State in the weight throw, taking home 15th at 13.06 meters, while Simpson and Caleb Walker (Greensboro, Ala.) finished 19th (12.30 meters) and 25th (10.44 meters) respectively.
 
Matthew Clarke (Six Roads, Barbados) finished 11th in the 60-meter hurdles with a time of 6.94, while Nicholas Moseley (Pittsbury, Calif.) Marcus Cade (Thomson, Ga.) both ended the day in the top-15 in the men's high jump to close out the day for the Hornets.
 
UP NEXT
Alabama State will resume competition next weekend as they travel to Lexington Kentucky for the Rob McCravy Invitational, hosted by the University of Kentucky on Friday, January 28 and Saturday, January 29.
