HOUSTON, Texas | Alabama State looks to bounce back from a last second loss against Prairie View A&M, hitting the floor on Monday night against Texas Southern at the H&PE Arena.

Alabama State (4-14, 3-3 SWAC) sits two games back of league-leading Southern heading into the contest on Monday night, and just one game back in the win column of Texas Southern (6-10, 4-3 SWAC). The two met twice last season with the Tigers winning both games and have won the last three games in the series with the last Hornets' win coming on February 3, 2020, in Montgomery.

- Alabama State sits two games back in the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) standings early in the season. They are in a three-way tie for sixth place with Alabama A&M and Bethune-Cookman (whom they play next Saturday in Mobile).
- Former Texas Southern guard Ashton McClelland (Houston, Texas) returns to the H&PE Arena after playing two years for the Tigers.
- Gerald Liddell (Cibolo, Texas) sat out the game against Prairie View A&M which allowed Alabama State to start their 12th different lineup this season – tied for second most in the country behind Memphis (13).
- Alabama State has several ties to the state of Texas including Liddell, Isaiah Range (Cedar Hill / Tarleton State), and McClelland as transfers, The Hornets also have Juan Reyna (San Antonio / Duncanville HS) and E.J. Clark (Dallas / McKinney) who played their high school basketball in the state.
- The Hornets are looking for their first win in this building since February 27, 2010.
- Alabama State leads the conference in four categories this season and finds itself 29th in the nation in free throw attempts and 53rd in free throws made thus far this season.
- Alabama State has played a pair of teams that were ranked at the time (Texas and Texas Tech) and played Iowa State who climbed to as high as eighth in the polls. They also played Iowa (receiving votes), before games against No. 4/3 UCLA and Memphis (receiving votes) were postponed due to COVID-19 protocols inside their opponents' programs.
