Alabama State Softball hosts HBCU Celebration tournament this weekend

MONTGOMERY, Ala. | Alabama State (4-7) returns home for competition this weekend as they host the HBCU Celebration Tournament from Friday, February 25 to Sunday, February 27.
 
Alabama A&M, Florida A&M, Grambling State and South Carolina State will all be in Montgomery for a weekend of ten total games in the Barbara Williams Softball Complex.

GAME NOTES
  • Alabama State is off to a 4-7 start so far this season with wins over Purdue Fort Wayne (Feb. 11), College of Charleston (Feb. 12), Texas A&M Corpus Christi (Feb. 18) and Prairie View A&M (Feb. 18). They are coming in after a 2-3 outing at the Whataburger Softball Invitational hosted by Tarleton State.
  • The Hornets will take the field four times in three days, starting Friday at 7 pm against Grambling to kick off the tournament before taking on South Carolina State and Alabama A&M on Saturday at 11:30 am and 4:30 pm respectively. They wrap up play on Sunday afternoon with a rematch against Alabama A&M at 4:30 pm.
  • Kindall DeRamus (Helena, Ala.) is hitting a team-high .405 at the plate in 11 games to go along with 15 hits, nine stolen bases, eight runs scored, and five RBI, followed by Jazmine Dodd (Bentonville, Ark.) batting .391 in nine games, earning nine hits, five runs and four runs batted in.
  • Bailey Greenlee (Snohomish, Wash.) has proved productive in the circle (35 IP / 34 SO / 4.12 ERA) good for a 3-4 record as well as at the plate with a .261 average along with six hits and six RBI and a run scored.
  • Alabama A&M is 1-8 coming into the tournament, after defeating Nicholls State in their second game of the year. They ended last weekend winless at the River City Classic, hosted by Alcorn State.
  • Grambling is coming into the weekend at 5-2, after winning three straight games, including a 17-2 win over Jackson State (Feb. 13) and a pair of wins over Texas College (Feb. 16). The Tigers are led by Ta'mya Johnson (.458 / 11 hits / 5 RBI) and Nyah Jones (.400 / 8 hits / 3 RBI).
  • South Carolina State is currently winless at 0-7 after competing in the Blue Hose Invitational hosted by Presbyterian College to start the season and the USC-Upstate Classic last weekend. Head coach Tatjana Matthews is in her second season leading the program.
