ARLINGTON, Texas | Alabama State heads into day two of the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) championships as the top seed after picking up four wins on the opening day of the tournament at the Bowling ITRC. The Hornets lead in total pins with 4,944 and an average of 197.8.
Alabama State (89-47) set a school record with the first win of the day over Florida A&M, before reeling off three more wins with their only loss coming by just nine pins to Prairie View A&M in their third match of the day. The Hornets defeated the Rattlers 995-851 in their opening match, before running their record to 2-0 with a 984-845 victory over Texas Southern. Following their loss to Prairie View A&M, the Hornets defeated Jackson State (968-863) and Southern (1,049-899).
Savanna Razor (Columbia, S.C.), last year's Bowler of the Year and an All-SWAC selection this year, leads all bowlers after the opening day with 1,069 total pins and an average of 213.80, leading Stephanie Vasquez by 10 pins. She is joined in the top 10 by
Lyric O'Steen (Southfield, Mich.) in sixth place with 1,008 puns and an average of 201.60 and
Emani Davis (Flushing, Mich.) in eighth place with 994 total pins and a 198.80 average.
Two other bowlers for Alabama State in the tournament are each in the top 15 with
Alahna DeGruy (Kenner, La.) coming in at 11th after the opening day and
Bailee Chapman (Gonzales, La.) in at 15th overall.
Alabama State leads Prairie View A& (3-2/4657 pins), Southern (2-3/4606 pins), Florida A&M (3-2/4536 pins), Jackson State (2-3/4533 pins), and Texas Southern (1-4/4199 pins) after the opening day. Bracket play begins on Saturday morning in Arlington with a chance to advance to the championship series.
