ARLINGTON, Texas | Alabama State advanced to the championship round of the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) Tournament after a pair of wins on Saturday, remaining as the only undefeated team in the tournament.
Alabama State (91-47) started the day with a 4-1 victory over Florida A&M after receiving a bye as the top seed after the qualifying round. The Hornets and Florida A&M split the first two games in their opening round match with the Rattlers winning game two by just two pins. The Hornets roared back with a 202-153 victory in the third game before taking a commanding 3-1 lead with a five-pin (208-203) win. The Hornets won the fifth and deciding game (207-187) to advance to the winner's bracket.
The Hornets advanced to the winner's bracket final against defending champion Prairie View A&M, defeating the Panthers 4-3 to advance to the championship match. Alabama State won the first game of the match 181-157, before the Panthers took the next two to take a 2-1 lead. The Hornets came back to even the series with a 175-159 win in game four, and then took the lead with a 204-180 win in game five. After Prairie View A&M evened the match, Alabama State blew past the Panthers with a 229-121 (108 pins) victory in game seven.
Savanna Razor (Columbia, S.C.) was named to the SWAC All-Tournament team after leading bowlers after the opening day with 1,069 total pins and an average of 213.80, leading Stephanie Vasquez by 10 pins. Alabama State is in search of its first conference tournament championship since 2017, with the winner earning the nod for the NCAA Championships.
The championship match is set for 1 pm.
