Alabama State and Alabama A&M split on first day of series

Teams meet in rubber match on Saturday afternoon

MONTGOMERY, Ala. | Alabama State and Alabama A&M split the opening two games of their Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) series at the Barbara Williams Softball Complex in a tale of two games.

Alabama A&M (8-18, 3-7 SWAC) used a 15-hit attack in the opening game of the series to pick up a 12-7 victory over the Hornets before Alabama State (15-18, 7-4 SWAC) answered with a run-rule victory in the second game of the day. The two teams will meet in the rubber match of the series on Saturday (April 2) at 1 pm.

Kindall DeRamus (Helena, Ala.) picked up five hits on the day including going 4-for-4 in the opening game of the series with three runs scored, while driving in three in the second game. Meanwhile, Jazmine Dodd (Bentonville, Ark.) picked up five hits on the day including scoring five runs and driving in four. Destinee Dixon (Bullard, Texas) picked up three RBI in the first game and another three in the second to finish with six total.

Jaeda Gardner (Pike Road, Ala.) finished game two 2-for 3 from the plate with three runs scored.

Bailey Greenlee (Snohomish, Wash.) suffered the loss in the opening game giving up eight runs off six hits in 1.2 innings, while Ashley Pye (Stockton, Calif.) picked up the win in game two working 6.0 innings and allowing just one run on five hits.

How It Happened (Game 1)
  • T1 | Lauryn Gross scored on a throwing error to get the inning started for Alabama A&M before Venice Sanders drove in a pair with a double to left center. Brooklyn Wallace singled up the middle to score Sanders for the final run of the inning (Alabama A&M, 4-0).
  • B1 | Alex Preston (Stockton, Calif.) reached on a fielder's choice allowing Deramus to score before Dodd scored on a sacrifice fly from Dixon to trim the lead in half (4-2, Alabama A&M).
  • T2 | Rachael McKinney singled up the middle to drive in a run before Sanders drove in three more with a home run (Alabama A&M, 8-2).
  • B2 | Dodd singled up the middle to drive in a pair before Dixon singled in a pair (Alabama A&M, 8-6).
  • T3 | Gross scored on a double steal (Alabama A&M, 9-6).
  • B6 | Preston drove in a run on a sacrifice fly (Alabama A&M, 9-7).
  • T7 | Alabama A&M pushed across three runs on a pair of singles and an error for the final margin (Alabama A&M, 12-7).
How It Happened (Game 2)
  • T1 | McKinney drove in Gross on an RBI groundout (1-0, Alabama A&M).
  • B3 | DeRamus drove in Gardner on an RBI groundout before Dixon drove in Dodd on a crazy play involving a pair of relays (2-1, Alabama State).
  • B5 | Dodd singled up the middle to drive in Gardner and DeRamus before Preston doubled home Dodd (5-1, Alabama State).
  • B6 | DeRamus reached on an error but was credited with a pair of RBI before Dixon walked off Alabama A&M with a two-run infield single (Alabama State, 9-1).
