KNOXVILLE, Tenn. | Alabama State will make its first appearance in the NCAA Regionals on Friday facing No. 1 national seed Tennessee inside Lindsey Nelson Stadium. The two will take the field for first pitch at 6 pm (ET) following the first game of the day between Georgia Tech and Campbell.
Alabama State (34-23) enters the tournament following a victory in the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) championship game against Southern on Sunday, while Tennessee (53-7) enters following the SEC regular season and tournament championships.
The last time the two teams met was back on April 27, 2016 with the Hornets claiming a 3-0 victory over Tennessee in Knoxville.

Ticket Information
All Tennessee season-ticket holders were awarded the opportunity to purchase postseason tickets for all games taking place in Knoxville. Season tickets were sold out for the 2022 season. A limited number of single-session tickets will be sold to the general public at the Lindsey Nelson Stadium ticket window starting 90 minutes prior to first pitch of each session.
About the Hornets
- Corey King (Lithonia, Ga.) was named the SWAC Player of the Year, Hitter of the Year, and Newcomer of the Year before knocking in the game-winning RBI in the championship game in the 14th inning on his way to All-Tournament honors. The sophomore hit .367 on the year with 87 total hits including 16 doubles and 14 home runs, all while scoring 62 runs and knocking in another 64.
- Hunter May (Slidell, La.) was named Second Team All-SWAC and earned All-Tournament honors, hitting .315 on the season with 21 doubles and eight home runs, while Chris Lewis (Alabaster, Ala.) hit .313 with five doubles, two triples, and two home runs.
- Cristopher DeGuzman (Fajardo, PR) was named Second Team All-SWAC after hitting .304 on the season with 10 doubles and five home runs.
- Breon Pooler (Huntsville, Ala.), the SWAC Tournament MVP and Second Team selection, finished 10-2 on the year with 3.19 ERA, logging 85 strikeouts in 84.2 innings. Payton Harris (Hattiesburg, Miss.) led the Hornets out of the bullpen with a 3-2 record and a 2.18 ERA, while Austin King (Fulton, Miss.) finished 6-2 with a 5.15 ERA and a complete game that got the Hornets to the championship and earned the senior All-Tournament honors.
About the Vols
- Tennessee has held the top ranking in every poll for much of the season, and lead the nation in just about every statistical category including home runs (141) with seven players in double digits and ERA (2.35).
- Kirby Connell leads the team with a 1.08 ERA and 0.78 WHIP with 28 appearances and a 3-0 record, while Chase Dollander leads the team in wins at 9-0 with a 2.21 ERA and a 0.72 WHIP. He also has recorded 99 strikeouts in 69.1 innings.
- Drew Beam and Chase Burns each finished with identical 8-1 records on the mount with Burns recording 96 strikeouts and a 2.61 ERA.
- Drew Gilbert leads the Vols at the plate, hitting .385 – one of five players at .300 or higher on the season – with 20 doubles and nine home runs. Meanwhile, Trey Lipscomb is hitting .357 with 16 doubles and 21 home runs while knocking in 77 RBI.
- Seth Stephenson leads Tennessee on the bases with 20 stolen bases (in 25 attempts) while hitting .335 and scoring 42 runs.
