MONTGOMERY, Ala. | Khalil Stewart will be representing Alabama State University Athletics this summer after he was selected for the National Basketball Association (NBA) HBCU Fellowship program.
Stewart was one of 73 selected out of 5,550 applicants and will be working with the Charlotte Hornets
communication department in Charlotte, North Carolina ruing the 10 week fellowship.
He will be working along side Charlotte's video team, taking photos, interviewing players, and writing press releases during the internship.
"I'm beyond excited to join the Charlotte Hornets organization as a digital media intern," Steward said. "I am the first ever representative of Alabama State University in this program and I'm looking forward to representing. I'm hoping to learn as much as I can, as well as make plenty of connections for my career aspirations."
The NBA HBCU Fellowship Program, aims to provide career development opportunities in the business of basketball for undergraduate and graduate students from Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs). Fellows are selected by NBA teams and the league office to work within a variety of departments, including ticket sales, corporate partnerships, IT, social responsibility, and marketing. The Fellowship Program is a paid 10-week summer internship program and will run from June – August.
The students went through a two-day orientation that included a message from NBA Commissioner Adam Silver, team-bonding exercises, panel discussions from current and former NBA players, getting professional headshots done and so much more. The inaugural HBCU Fellowship program in 2022=23 helped 60 interns learn the ins and outs of life in the front office of NBA and WNBA teams.
