PRAIRIE VIEW, Texas | TJ Madlock finished with a career-high 30 points and Alabama State won for the first time since 2016, defeating Prairie View A&M 74-67 in Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) action on Saturday night.

Madlock, who got into early foul trouble, connected on 10-of-17 shooting from the floor and 10-of-13 from the free throw line to lead Alabama State (10-9, 5-1 SWAC). He also finished with five rebounds and three assists. He was joined in double figures by
CJ Hines who finished with 14 points.

Amarr Knox and
Eric Coleman each finished with eight points for the Hornets off the bench.

Alabama State built an 11-point lead twice in the second half and withstood a pair of runs, including one that Prairie View A&M used to get to within three.

The Panthers were led by Bryan Myles with 18 points and 11 rebounds.

How It Happened
- Alabama State led the majority of the first half behind balanced scoring until Prairie View A&M took a 23-22 lead late in the half. From that point, Alabama State went on an 11-1 run to take a 33-24 lead before the Panthers ended the run with 3:04 to play in the half.
- After the Panthers trimmed the lead to five late in the half, Isaiah Range took a feed after two missed free throws and drained a three to extend the lead to 39-31 with just 34.4 seconds left in the opening half.
- The Hornets finished the first half shooting 44.8 (13-of-29) percent from the floor and 44.4 (4-of-9) percent from beyond the arc. They also shot just 56.3 (9-of-16) percent from the free throw line.
- Prairie View A&M finished the first half shooting 41.7 (10-of-24) percent from the floor and just 30.0 (3-of-10) percent from beyond the arc.
- For the game, Alabama State finished shooting 46.2 (24-of-42) percent from the floor and 35.3 (6-of-17) percent from beyond the arc. They also shot 64.5 (20-of-31) percent from the free throw line.
- Meanwhile, Prairie View A&M finished the night shooting 41.5 (22-of-53) percent from the floor and 33.3 (6-of-18) percent from beyond the arc.
Alabama State Notes
- For the first time since 2016, Alabama State won a game in the state of Texas in conference action. The last win came in February 2016 against the Panthers.
- For the first time this season, Sean Smith was held scoreless – having scored in the first 18 games of the year.
- Micah Octave did not record a steal, ending his streak at 18 consecutive games to start his collegiate career.
- The win was the fourth away from home in conference play this season in four opportunities for the Hornets.
