MONTGOMERY, Ala. | The Alabama State defense racked up six sacks, but the Hornets fell 16-10 to Jackson State at ASU Stadium on Saturday afternoon.
The Tigers improved to 9-2 on the year and 7-0 in Southwestern Athletic Conference play, while the Hornets fell to 5-5 overall and 4-3 in conference matchups.
Daquon Kincey led all Hornets rushers with 144 yards and one touchdown in the contest, picking up 11.1 yards per carry. The 100-yard effort marked Kincey's second of the season. nA.J. Gates also added 35 yards on the ground.
Jalen Jones pulled in one catch for 10 yards.
Demarkus Cunningham paced the Alabama State defensive effort, recording 10 tackles, 3.5 TFL, 1.5 sacks, and one recovered fumble. Ethan Tookes added one interception and Janil Brown had six tackles, 1.0 TFL, one sack, and one forced fumble in the loss.
Defensively, Alabama State did an excellent job neutralizing the Jackson State offensive attack, holding the Tigers to 194 total yards. The Hornets kept Jackson State under 150 yards on both the ground and through the air, allowing 120 passing and 74 rushing yards. The Hornets defense lived in Jackson State's backfield all game, piling up six sacks and 10 total tackles for loss.
